Mendoza to Santiago de Chile, a travel through the Andes

If your vacation includes both Mendoza and Chile, we strongly recommend this scenic road trip through the high Andes Mountains. Either if traveling from Mendoza to Santiago de Chile, or from Santiago to Mendoza, you will maximize your journey, as the way offers many attractions. Actually, you will go across all the attractions included in the traditional “High Mountain Tour”, on both side of the Andes.

Departure is early in the morning, since the custom is usually very busy. We head south through the famous route Nbr. 40, across the vineyards and fruit plantations. And then we follow the national route number 7, part of the famous Pan-American Road. Get inside the « precordillera », the first range of mountains and discover the hidden shapes in the stones. In the way you will see the Potrerillos dam and lake, and short after, the town of Uspallata, where the movie “Seven years in Tibet” was filmed. We continue driving along the Mendoza River Canyon. On the way, there is time to admire the "Inca Bridge", a wonder of nature, and the viewpoint of the Aconcagua, the highest mountain in America!

The border between Argentina and Chile is located in the middle of a 3 km long tunnel unites both countries, and short after we arrive to the Customs, where the paperwork is done. Once in Chile, and very close to the border, the world famous El Portillo Hotel appears surrounded by Mountains and framed by the Inca Lagoon. It is the best place in the mountain to enjoy lunch. The restaurant offers a complete International menu, but without any doubt, what will be remembered is the privileged view of the lagoon, the snowcapped mountains and the ski runs.

After lunch we continue the route down the “Caracoles”, a series of 28 Hairpin turns. During this steep descent you will have a splendid view of the Mountains, daring ski runs and the old trans-Andean railroad. Once we arrive at Los Andes, the narrow winding road turns into a modern highway. At the end we will drive through agricultural lands until we reach the busy Capital, Santiago de Chile.
